Turning Trash into Treasure: PBL Initiative Inspires Eco-Friendly Innovations at SD YPK Yongsu Spari

On November 16, 2023, YNS Facilitator, Lasarus Samanui, provided guidance for the implementation of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) Module at SD YPK Yongsu Spari. The Project-Based Learning conducted focused on introducing types of waste and the utilization of waste for recycling.

At the beginning of the activity, the facilitator guided students from grades 4, 5, and 6 to understand the importance of maintaining environmental cleanliness. Subsequently, the facilitator, along with the students, collected waste around the school. From the gathered waste, the facilitator introduced each type of waste and the decomposition duration to the students. The facilitator also provided an opportunity for the students to actively express their opinions about whether the obtained waste could be reused into useful items.

During this activity, students also created useful items from the collected waste, such as seedling containers made from used bottles and fabric, flowers made from snack packaging, aqua cups, and cans. Additionally, styrofoam was repurposed into glue, and tin cans were transformed into pencil holders.

The implementation of turning waste into useful items like this would be highly beneficial if done sustainably. Therefore, the facilitator (Lasarus Samanui) will ensure that the knowledge gained by students in this PBL activity can be applied in the students’ living environment.
